What Makes Swanson so Great?:
- We incorporate Technology: We use cutting-edge technology to collaborate, communicate, and learn. Every student gets a device checked out to them. We have a state of the art STEM Lab. We integrate technology into all of our subjects and believe it is our duty to prepare students for the future. As teachers and students, we strive to practice ethical use of technology by being good digital citizens.
- We are Title I: We get additional money from the federal government to address the needs of our students. Among other things, we use our funds to lower our class sizes, provide additional instruction in reading and math, buy additional education materials, support technology, and provide family learning events. Title 1 funds and additional grants also help us provide free breakfast to all our students, and summer school opportunities for our students.
- We are a Healthy Choice School: We believe education involves the whole child. We participate in Fuel Up to Play 60, and believe children (and adults) need to move for at least 60 minutes each day. During the day we take brain breaks and we have organized activities at recess. Throughout the year we have various music, dance, arts, and sports clubs, and all year long we have a walking/running club. Last year we even got a grant to put a track around our playground. We encourage healthy habits by providing a salad bar during lunch, encouraging healthy snacks in the classroom and at parties, and we even have a vegetable garden.
- We value Diversity: We believe that every one of our students and staff members brings unique strengths, gifts, and talents to our classrooms. One of our greatest strengths as a school is that we welcome and celebrate students of all ethnic, social, and economic backgrounds. We have a staff that is highly qualified to meet the needs of our English language learners, as well as the needs of our special education, and advanced learners. We have a primary and intermediate ASD Center that specializes in meeting the unique learning and social-emotional needs of our students on the Autistic Spectrum Disorder. We strive to create a community that fosters respect and positive interactions between all students, teachers, and families.
- We are Supported by our Community: We are blessed to have so many dedicated volunteers at Swanson. Every day we have people from the Kiwanis, Arvada Rotary Club, and Arvada High School that come into work with our students. We participate in the Backpack Program, sponsored by the Arvada Food Bank, that helps provide food to some of our families. We have a partnership with the Arvada Police department and share a resource officer with other Arvada elementary schools. We also have many people who support Swanson with generous financial gifts, our STEM Lab was donated by the Gill Foundation. We have an active PTA and encourage our parents, grandparents, and community members to come in and get involved.
